2016 welcomed the second PDHPE specific #Teachmeet to Sydney. (What is a teachmeet?)
The #TeachMeet kicked off with 5 students talking openly about their thoughts and feelings about PDHPE, what they enjoy / don't enjoy, whether they think it is important to them and why. Hearing these honest reflections from the students was really beneficial and motivational, and reminded us of the important job and responsibility we have to our students.
This year we had 8 volunteers present some ideas / philosophies around PDHPE which were all well received.
1. Nathan Weaver (@weaverteaches )
Nathan spoke to us about the opportunities that being a connected educator can provide. Many Phys Ed teachers are taking to social media to share, connect and collaborate. These connections bring new ideas, challenge your thinking and ultimately help you reflect upon and improve your teaching practices.
Nathan also introduced us to the #Aussie Physed community. A group of dynamic Australian Health and PE teachers who regularly connect, and are producing some great chats and resources via their voxer and website.
He went on to mention some great Phys Ed related podcasts that you could be listening to
2. Dom Sidaros (@domsidaros)
Dommy demonstrated how she has been using the online multiple choice game quizizz with her senior classes. Along the lines of kahoot but with the added benefit of having a self paced option so students are not forced to compete in terms of time and therefore can have more time processing and thinking if need be. As with Kahoot, plenty of PDHPE teachers are already using quizezz so a lot of the leg has been done. Just type PDHPE into the search bar and you'll find plenty of quizzes to get you going, and of course you can create your own.
3. Andy Hair (MrHairPhysed)
Andy joined us via voxer (thanks to Nathan, especially after all the technical difficulties caused by the suburb blackout) from Geelong. Andy is one of the founding fathers of the #Aussie PhysEd community and spoke to us about the community and how to get involved. He also spoke about his Phys Ed philosophies and his ideas about changing the perception and direction of modern Physical Education. Andy has a strong passion for the subject and has many thought provoking ideas that he shares regularly in his PD's he provides around Victoria for PE teachers. His ideas around 'The Disneyland Approach' to PE piqued a large amount of interest.
4. Tristan Jones
Tristan told us about his successful Parkour unit he had recently run as part of the movement and composition strand. Students started indoors practicing some basic movements using the video from Apex Movement . Moves included the quadrupedal gallop, the step vault and parkour roll. Once students had learnt to move confidently and safely, Tristan took his class out into the schools grounds as children looked for challenging (and safe) new environments to try out their skills. Students worked in pairs and three in a 'follow the leader' type activity to round of the unit. Parkour is a great unit of study which students love and provides something a little different from your usual dance or gymnastics unit.
5. James Muir (@jammuir)
This year I decided to give a quick run down of 'Things I've Used and Things I'm Having A Crack At'. You can check out the presentation below

6. Trent Worrall
Trent took us outside to start off our practical presentations. He gave a quick demonstration of 'Human Net' volleyball.
This game is great for practicing volleyball skills and concepts, especially when you don't have a net. Essentially you have 3 teams on court at one time. On team in the middle is the 'net' the other teams are either side as in normal volleyball. The game is played as normal with the exception being that the 'net' helps keep the rallies going if it happens to come to them.
7. Ben Donaldson
Ben used his expertise in striking and fielding games to take us through some gamesense concepts using small sided games. Games were played in groups of 3-5 with one batter and everyone else fielding. Field arrangements were changed to emphasize particular concepts or skills within the game, and to show how you can differentiate the level of challenge depending on the students.
8. Ross Montague (@MrMonty_PDHPE)
Ross concentrated his presentation on 'Fun Warm Up Games' putting the attendee's through their paces with a human 'tic-tac-to' running game and then a great invasion game warm up where an attacking team has to run across a 10m wide line without being tagged by a defending team who have to remain on the line and can only move laterally. The attacking team gets a number of attacks in a row so they can work on strategies to try and get as many of their team across the line as possible. It's a great game that gets you moving and thinking.
Finally we finished off with the power of Voxer. During Nathan's talk he asked for a random PE related question which ending up being "What to expect / tips for your first prac as student teacher". By the end of the TeachMeet we had approximately 8 invaluable responses via Voxer for PE teachers around Australia!
Thanks to all presenter and attendee's.
We hope to have another #TeachMeet PDHPE before the year us out!!
